Welcome to 10 Years in the Making.

Tonight's performance marks an important milestone for Meng Wei Yue Opera Studio as we celebrate ten years of preserving, practicing, and sharing the art of Yue Opera in Canada.

What began as a small group united by a love of traditional Chinese opera has grown into a vibrant artistic community. Over the past decade, our members, volunteers, supporters, and audiences have helped transform a shared passion into a lasting cultural presence within Canada's diverse multicultural landscape. Together, we have sought not only to preserve a treasured art form, but also to build bridges of understanding through the universal language of the performing arts.

Known for its lyrical melodies, poetic storytelling, graceful movement, and refined aesthetics, Yue Opera occupies a special place in Chinese cultural heritage. Distinguished by its celebrated tradition of all-female casts — including women portraying both male and female characters — Yue Opera offers a theatrical experience unlike any other. Through elegant performance, expressive music, and richly layered storytelling, it brings timeless human emotions to life in a way that transcends language and cultural boundaries.

This anniversary gala is both a celebration of the past and a vision for the future. Through a selection of beloved classics, artistic collaborations, and performances by dedicated artists, we honor the journey that has brought us here while reaffirming our commitment to sharing Yue Opera with new audiences for years to come.

Maggie is dedicated to promoting Chinese cultural heritage in Canada by founding the Meng Wei Yue Opera Studio in Ottawa in 2016. As organizer of the Palette of Cultures Showcase, she passionately fosters Canada-China cultural exchange, engaging diverse audiences through events like Asian Heritage Month and the Tulip Festival. Committed to advancing cultural diversity, Maggie earned the 2023 Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medallion and 2024 Legacy Award for her meaningful contributions to the communities.
